Ornate gravestone...

I waited until 'the magic hour' to go out and take these shots. I still had difficulty with exposure. *grrr* In the shot with blue sky the gravestone- which is the focal point of the shot- is underexposed. In the shot with white sky the gravestone is properly exposed and the sky in this direction actually was white so I suppose the sky is as well, it just doesn't look the way I wish it did. The sky from the top pic with the foreground from the bottom would be nice. *roll eyes*

  1. I feel your frustration. I think getting the correct exposure for the gravestone was the way to go, you could mess with it a little and underexpose a bit to help with the sky or you could just try to exclude the sky.

  2. I did take a couple shots that excluded the sky but I didn't care for the composition. I think part of the learning curve is knowing WHEN to take shots WHERE. This places gets full sun at certain times of day so I could get a blue sky shot, just not so late in the evening. Maybe there are exceptions to the magic- like when trees block the sunset in the west so all you get is darkness or white sky in the east. ??? I guess at the very least I learned something new today. :/

  3. Hope, I went out last evening (about 8:00) to take pictures of my daughter on an old metal bridge over a tree-lined creek. The light coming through the trees onto the bridge was beautiful, but there was so much contrast in the picture that she looked unnatural. The pictures looked much better converted to black-and-white, but then it was hard to distinguish her from the trees. I think I need to place her somewhere different, maybe in deeper shade? Anyway, just wanted you to know that I'm also grappling with the learning curve of what to meter or exactly when to catch that magical light.

P.S. I posted our website because the site required a URL, but there is nothing there but one photo of our dog! I'm hoping my son will set it up for us this summer.

  4. Hi Lisa! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who struggles with exposure when the lighting isn't just right. I'm sure we'll both figure it out. :-)
