Learning...

Kya had dance class tonight and I decided to stay and take pictures. She has beautiful feet that seem to know just what to do all on their own! She loves it when Miss Donna lets them try out the pointe shoes so tonight was a good night. She was clapping her hands and laughing when she would get a move just right. I must admit that I was too caught up in the moment to capture it with a picture but that's okay. I'd rather have the moment.

Kya wasn't the only one learning tonight. I took this shot with manual settings. It took me a while to figure out the right ratio of aperture and shutter speed but I eventually figure it out. I'm proud to say that I selected all of the settings of this picture and didn't edit it at all. I managed to get about 30 shots worth keeping during dance class but this one was my favorite.

  1. I had to come back and look at it again this morning. It's just such a beautiful shot. So what settings did you end up with?

  2. Aww, thanks! It's pretty hard to go wrong taking pics of pointe shoes as far as composition goes so I was able to just think about my settings. Aperture was 5.6, shutter speed 1/13s (shows just as 13 on my camera), ISO 800, exposure bias 0.

Oddly enough when I set the white balance for the flourecent (sp?) lighting in the room I didn't like it but when I set it on shade everything came out great.

  3. Well, I would think that setting for florescent would make it too bright and white looking. I love how it has a tiny tint of yellow...makes it look antique-y and very classic looking!

  4. This is such a beautiful picture! So so so beautiful. Could I say that more? If I were you, I would be framing this right now!

  5. This is an incredibly beautiful picture! Of course I love it because it's ballet and it looks great. I also have to comment that it took me YEARS to get my feet to look that good. Your girl's got talent. :)

  6. Thanks Summer- this is one of my favorite shots I've ever taken. It all just came together. And of course I think my girl is talented but it's nice to have it reinforced- especially from someone as talented as you!
